The team

Our multidisciplinary team brings together senior clinical researchers, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, research coordinators, and Master’s and PhD trainees specializing in addictology, toxicology, psychedelics, and related areas of psychology and neuroscience. United by a shared commitment to rigorous, compassionate science, we are dedicated to advancing mental health research and improving treatment outcomes and quality of life for individuals living with psychological distress and substance use disorders.

Samuel Cyr

I am a research coordinator in Dr. Nicolas Garel's laboratory at the University of Montreal Hospital Centre. I hold a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Population Health option) from the University of Montreal, where my thesis focused on burnout among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. My current work in Dr. Garel's laboratory involves clinical trials exploring ketamine and ACT-based interventions for treatment-resistant depression and substance use disorders.

Paola Lavin

I work in clinical research in psychiatry and addiction studies at the CR-CHUM. My work explores the biopsychosocial dimensions of psychedelic-assisted interventions for the treatment of substance use disorders and psychiatric comorbidities. I collaborate on several interdisciplinary projects and have the privilege of mentoring trainees at various stages of their academic journey. What makes our team unique is its openness, flexibility, and deep empathy—qualities that foster both our scientific creativity and our commitment to genuine collaboration. In my free time, I enjoy practicing martial arts, cycling, and working on upcycling projects.

Leandre Sabourin

With a master's degree in psychology from the University of Montreal, I am interested in integrating different approaches, such as neuroimaging and qualitative research, to better understand the psychedelic experience and its therapeutic potential. I currently contribute to various projects at the lab, as I firmly believe in the positive effects of ketamine-assisted therapy and its role in the evolution of mental health approaches. On a more personal note, I dedicate much of my free time to sports, particularly capoeira and bodyweight training, and I have a passion for travel and electronic music.

Leandre Sabourin,

Penelope Coupal

I am currently completing a Master’s in Psychedelics and Consciousness Studies at the University of Ottawa. My research focuses on the development and evaluation of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies, particularly for the treatment of mood disorders, with a specific interest in the psychometric assessment of therapeutic processes. More broadly, I am interested in how psychedelic approaches can be integrated into community-based models of care. Being part of an interdisciplinary team dedicated to advancing psychedelic practices grounded in both science and compassion deeply nourishes my commitment to more human-centred models of care.

Hello, my name is Juliette! I’m involved in projects exploring the use of repeated ketamine infusions alongside psychotherapy to alleviate the symptoms in individuals living with treatment resistant depression. My background in fundamental neuroscience has shaped my belief that human experience and individual differences should not be considered a challenge, but rather an opportunity to optimize treatments. Although I’m only present on a part-time basis, I have been highly motivated by the wide variety of expertise and by the genuine kindness of each and every member of the team.

Christina McAnulty

Christina is a research associate with a PhD in Psychiatry and Addictology from the Université de Montréal. She has a diverse background in addiction research, ranging from studying heroin-induced epigenetic changes occuring in reward circuits in the brain to working on large, multi-site randomized controlled trials studying novel approaches to treat substance use disorders.

Nicolas Gamin

I hold the title of psychologist in France, Belgium, and Quebec, and I am currently completing a Doctorate in Psychology for practicing clinicians (D.Ps.) at the Université de Sherbrooke. My research explores the lived experience of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy among individuals living with treatment-resistant depression and alcohol use disorder. Guided by curiosity, empathy, and a spirit of collaboration, I aim to deepen our understanding of how meaningful human experiences can inform and transform clinical practice.

Philippe Lavoie

I am currently completing an MA in Clinical Psychology at Concordia University under the co-supervision of Dr. Nicolas Garel and Dr. Alexandre Morin (Substantive Methodological Synergy Research Laboratory). My research interests gravitate towards developing psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for mood and substance use disorders, with a particular focus on the psychometric assessment of psychotherapeutic processes. As a member of the lab, I’m proud to be part of a team of researchers and clinicians dedicated to advancing innovative, evidence-based care in psychedelic psychotherapy.

I am a neuroscience and statistics student at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia and a research intern at the CHUM Research Centre (CRCHUM). I am currently contributing to a systematic review on the severity criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD) in pharmacological randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This experience is an enriching opportunity, allowing me to work within a genuine, dedicated, and highly collaborative team. My curiosity is nurtured, my methodological rigor strengthened, and my scientific communication refined. The advice and feedback, always generous and constructive, stimulate my development and reinforce our collective dynamic, driven by a shared ambition: to have a positive and tangible impact on the world.

Assistant Professor. Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit. Associate Investigator, Research Institute - McGill University Health Center. Family Medicine and Anesthesia Departments, McGill University. I am a practicing physician and a PhD student with Dr. Garel. My research focuses on mental health (chronic pain, mood, addiction), harm reduction and deprescribing. I rely on systematic synthesis and primary data collection, and am interested in ketamine clinical trials, iatrogenic dependences (benzodiazepines, opioids, cannabis etc.) and patient-focused outcomes. I chose to work with this team because it values high profession standards, supports curiosity and scientific inquiry, and appreciates humanistic approach to medical sciences. This working atmosphere allows for a rare combination of respect, kindness and healthy professional drive. An excellent and motivated team!
