What is a clinical trial?

Clinical trials are carefully designed research studies conducted in healthcare settings on groups of volunteers participants. They allow for better understanding of treatment’s safety, efficacy, and benefit to those who need them. There are currently more than 100 000 clinical trials underway worldwide. In Quebec, more than 2300 clinical trials are actively contributing to health innovation, moving research forward in ways that can meaningfully improve care and quality-of-life. The clinical studies conducted by Dr. Nicolas Garel’s team  aim to improve treatment and long-term outcomes for individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Available Studies

Study 1

The Montreal Model of Ketamine-Therapy for Alcohol Use Disorder and Comorbid Treatment-Resistant Depression: A Feasibility Trial. Duration. Recruitment status. Population criteria. Study design.

This study explores the feasibility and acceptability of combining Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with ketamine within the framework of the Montreal Model – a structured, integrative psychedelic ketamine therapy developed for severe treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

Participants sought: Adults aged 18 to 70 who have both alcohol use disorder (AUD) and treatment-resistant unipolar or bipolar depression (TRD).

Your involvement in the study: Participants receive eight weekly therapy sessions using ACT (either in person or online), along with six ketamine treatments given through an IV.

Study 2

Assessing Clinician Consensus on Psychedelic Treatment (ACCEPT): A North American Study

This North-American study explores how addiction medicine specialists view psychedelic-assisted therapies for treating substance use disorders, including their concerns, perceived challenges, barriers to use, and ethical considerations. The ACCEPT study contributes to scientific knowledge and innovation by gathering data that could help shape public health policies, guide professional training programs, and support the development of future treatment approaches and services.

Participants sought: licensed addiction medicine specialists who work in clinical or research settings across North America.

Your involvement in the study: participants fill out an online survey and, if interested, can take part in a focus group discussion and a semi-structured interview.
